The Ultimate Guide to Removing Stubborn Stains from Sports Shoes & Joggers

by SHOE INN 04 Jul 2026

Whether you hit the gym daily, enjoy morning runs, or just wear your favorite joggers casually, sports shoes are bound to get dirty. From mud and grass stains to deep-set sweat marks, sports shoes require careful cleaning to avoid ripping the mesh or ruining the cushioned soles.

Here is your ultimate guide to safely removing tough stains from your sports shoes and joggers without destroying their performance features.

What You Need:

  • A soft-bristle brush (or laundry brush)

  • Liquid laundry detergent (works best for fabric and mesh)

  • Warm water

  • A clean microfiber towel or sponge

  • An old toothbrush for tight spots

Step 1: Remove Inserts and Knock Off Dry Mud

Before adding water, remove the shoelaces and the inner insoles. Wash the laces separately. If your insoles are muddy, wipe them down with a damp cloth, but do not soak them as it can destroy their shape and cushioning. Brush away all dry mud, grass, and dust from the outside of the shoe.

Step 2: Spot-Treat the Tough Stains

For fabric, knit, or mesh joggers, liquid laundry detergent is highly effective because it breaks down sweat and organic dirt.

  1. Mix a few drops of liquid laundry detergent with warm water in a small bowl.

  2. Dip your toothbrush into the soapy water and apply it directly to the stained areas.

  3. Gently scrub the stain in a circular motion. Let the soap sit on the stubborn spots for 5 minutes to break up the dirt.

Step 3: Clean the Mesh Panels

Mesh is delicate and can fray if scrubbed too hard. Use a soft cloth or a damp sponge dipped in your soapy solution to gently wipe the mesh surfaces. Avoid using harsh bleaching agents, as they can weaken the synthetic fibers and leave yellow patches.

Step 4: Clean the Midsoles and Soles

The rubber or foam midsole (the thick bottom part of your shoe) often collects black scuff marks. Use your brush with a bit more pressure here. If the scuffs won't move, a dedicated sneaker cleaner or foam rub will pull the grease and dirt right out of the porous foam material.

Step 5: Wipe and Air Dry (No Machine Drying!)

Wipe the entire shoe down with a clean towel dampened with fresh water to remove all soap residue.

  • Crucial Tip: Never put sports shoes in a mechanical clothes dryer. The intense heat will warp the rubber soles, melt the glue holding the shoe together, and completely shrink the mesh. Air-dry them indoors away from direct sunlight.

Pro-Tip for Peak Performance

To extend the lifespan of your sports shoes, try to spot-clean them immediately after a muddy run or a heavy gym session. For quick, waterless maintenance on premium knit or mesh joggers, keeping a rinse-free cleaning foam handy will save you hours of scrubbing and dry-time.
