How to Prevent Your Sneakers from Creasing: Tips to Keep Them Looking Brand New

by SHOE INN 16 Jul 2026

There is nothing quite like the feeling of unboxing a crisp, brand-new pair of sneakers. Whether they are classic leather kicks or performance sports joggers, they look flawless. But within just a few days of walking, reality sets in—ugly, permanent horizontal creases begin to form across the toe box.

Creasing is a natural result of your feet bending as you walk, but it quickly makes expensive shoes look old, worn out, and neglected. Fortunately, you don’t have to walk like a penguin to protect your kicks. Here are 4 highly effective ways to prevent and fix sneaker creasing.

1. Insert Specialized Crease Protectors (The Best Prevention)

If you want to stop creases before they ever start, crease protectors (or sneaker shields) are a must-have accessory. These are lightweight, flexible plastic or foam inserts that slide directly into the front toe box of your sneakers.

  • They act as an internal armor, keeping the leather taut and structurally supported even when your foot bends.

  • Pro-Tip: Buy a size that allows you to trim the edges with scissors for a perfectly comfortable custom fit.

2. Ensure You are Wearing the Right Size

Many people accidentally buy sneakers that are half a size or a full size too big. When there is excess empty space between the top of your toes and the inside ceiling of the shoe, the material collapses dramatically with every step, creating deep, harsh wrinkles. Always ensure your sneakers fit snugly without pinching your toes.

3. Use a Shoe Tree Immediately After Wearing

When you take off your shoes, they are still warm and slightly damp from your feet's natural humidity. This is the exact moment the material settles into its creased shape. Inserting a plastic or wooden shoe tree the moment you take them off forces the material back into its original, smooth shape while it cools down and dries.

How to Fix Existing Creases (The Iron Hack)

If your favorite sneakers are already heavily creased, you can actually iron them out using this famous sneakerhead method:

  1. Stuff the shoe tightly with socks, newspapers, or washcloths until the toe box is completely firm and the creases are pushed out from the inside.

  2. Dampen a small, clean cotton towel or washcloth with water and place it directly over the creased area on the outside of the shoe.

  3. Turn your household clothes iron to a low-to-medium heat setting (with steam turned on).

  4. Gently iron over the damp towel in continuous circular motions for 10–15 seconds at a time. The combination of heat and moisture relaxes the leather fibers, flattening out the wrinkles like magic!

  5. Leave the internal stuffing inside until the shoe completely cools down to lock in the smooth shape.
