The Ultimate Guide to Cleaning and Maintaining White Sneakers

by SHOE INN 15 Jul 2026

White sneakers are a timeless fashion staple. They look crisp, match almost any outfit, and instantly elevate your casual style. However, keeping them bright white in Pakistan’s dusty streets, muddy roads, and unexpected rain puddles can feel like a never-ending battle. Within a few weeks, pure white fabric can turn into a dull, yellowish-gray.

To save your favorite kicks, follow this ultimate guide to cleaning, restoring, and maintaining your white sneakers.

Phase 1: Deep Cleaning (Based on Material)

1. Canvas & Fabric Sneakers (e.g., Converse, Vans)

Canvas easily absorbs liquids and stains deep into its fibers.

  • The Mix: In a small bowl, mix equal parts baking soda and laundry detergent with a little warm water to create a thick paste.

  • The Method: Dip an old toothbrush into the paste and scrub the canvas fabric in circular motions.

  • The Rinse: Wipe the paste away with a damp microfiber cloth. Do not soak the shoe completely under running water, as it can dissolve the internal glue.

2. Smooth Leather Sneakers (e.g., Air Force 1s, Stan Smiths)

Leather doesn't absorb stains like canvas, making it much easier to wipe clean.

  • The Method: Dip a soft microfiber cloth in warm water mixed with a few drops of dish soap. Wring it out well and gently wipe down the leather panels.

  • The Scuff Fix: For stubborn black scuff marks on leather, use a specialized Suede Eraser or a Magic Eraser sponge dipped in water to rub the mark away instantly.

Phase 2: Restoring the Midsoles (The Toothpaste Hack)

The thick rubber or foam rim around the bottom of your shoe (the midsole) takes the heaviest beating and turns yellow over time.

  1. Apply a generous amount of plain white toothpaste (avoid colored gel toothpastes) directly onto the dirty rubber midsole.

  2. Scrub vigorously with a stiff-bristled brush or toothbrush for 2–3 minutes.

  3. Let it sit for 5 minutes, then wipe it completely clean with a wet towel. The mild abrasives in toothpaste will leave the rubber looking bright white again.

Phase 3: The Golden Rules of Drying

The biggest mistake people make is putting wet white shoes directly under the scorching sun to dry faster. This triggers a chemical reaction in the fabric fibers that leaves behind ugly, permanent yellow sweat stains.

  • Always air-dry indoors in a well-ventilated room or under a ceiling fan.

  • Stuff the inside tightly with plain white paper towels or tissue paper. This absorbs moisture from the inside while holding the shoe's original shape. Avoid newspaper, as the black ink can bleed onto wet white fabric.
